identity theft...is it really that bad?

Identity theft is a crime that the public has least information on it. Identity theft is a form of fraud in which someone pretends to be someone else by assuming that person's identity,typically in order to access resources or obtain credit and other benefits in that persons name. Identity thieves usually target all the members of society. They utilise information such as bank accounts or health records which people usually post on their profiles in the internet. They use methods such as hacking infiltrate the accounts of the victim and steal the necessary information the need e.g credit card number. They then use this information to pass themselves off as the victim they acquired the information from. Members of the public are not really aware of this crime as it is not usually given such attention by the media but it is a worsening entity. People have this false image that the internet is safe but in reality they couldn't be more mistaken.The internet is not secure and information (which is very powerful) is siphoned out everyday. Awareness of the dangers of internet crimes needs to be raised and the general public needs to be warned.
